Symposium – 26 March 2010

Attention! The program has changed, see this link.

On the 26th of March 2010 the symposium “Refining around the World” will take place. This symposium is organized in celebration of the 9th lustrum of C.T.S.G. Alembic. During this symposium a number of lecturers from different players in the industry will speak about optimizing the energy resources that are present on the earth.

The subject of this symposium “Optimizing earth’s resources” is nowadays a hot topic. Research is conducted all around the world to obtain different alternatives for the finitely available fossil fuels. Solar and wind energy are the most common alternatives, but lots of other possibilities are less familiar, although some are promising. Due to the increasing importance of energy consumption and the involved impact on the environment, the research is focused on alternatives that have a closed CO2-cycle.

The focus can also be set on the optimization of current energy resources. Currently, only a small part of the oil which is present on earth is used because the other part is difficult to obtain or to process. To optimize these sources in the future, more research has to be conducted.

New processes need to be designed to be able to satisfy the energy demand in the future. These new processes require new or adapted equipment. Because the costs of these improvements are high, the different options should be considered. It is necessary to obtain the economically most favorable way to maintain the production of energy in the future.

During the symposium the different sides of this problem will be discussed by the six lecturers and a chairman. All of them are researchers or industry related people.
